A recent study reveals that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying such drugs must be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
