Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential further challenges.
